What products and services do Mortlock Timber offer?

Mortlock Timber operates as a make-to-order manufacturer, meaning our products are custom-made rather than off-the-shelf items. This approach offers enhanced flexibility with product options and streamlines the manufacturing process, leading to improved quality and cost efficiency.

Here is what we will cover in this blog:

Let's get into it!

How manufacturing operates at Mortlock

The production journey begins with scheduling. Once an order is confirmed and the deposit is paid, our scheduling team secures a production slot, verifies stock availability and procures any necessary timber or materials.

When the job is ready for production, timber is sourced from stock and sent to the initial moulding machine for skip dressing or gauging.

Skip dressing involves lightly machining rough sawn boards to straighten them, square the edges, and create a straight edge for further processing. This step ensures a straighter board, simplifying the installation process.

Next, the timber moves to the profiling line, where it is shaped and finished through a moulding machine. After profiling, the timber undergoes finishing according to the project specifications.

Finishing options include sanding, charring, texturing the surface, pre-oiling --and applying various film-forming coatings such as Fireshield and Enviro Clear.

Finally, the completed order is sent to dispatch, where all components are packed together and the final check ensures all items are included as per the purchase order before the delivery is booked.

Products we offer at Mortlock Timber

Internal timber lining - Satinplank

Satinplank is a timber lining system that is primarily designed for internal applications. Our timber lining boards are available in seven different profiles and different finishes to achieve amazing textures and colours for a space. Satinplank profiles are readily available in our Australian native hardwoods, thermally-modified timber and American oak.

Tongue and groove Satinplank profiles are easily installed with the two fixing methods of face fix and secret fix. Secret fix is achieved by securing the timber lining board through the tongue. Satinplank can be used horizontally and vertically on non-exposed (to the weather) walls or ceilings. Learn more about Satinplank here

Timber cladding - Trendplank

Trendplank is our tongue and groove, timber cladding system that is designed to allow for the natural movement of timber. It is primarily used for external applications, however, it can easily be used for internal spaces as it is a concealed fixed cladding. This system comes with a range of proprietary corner trims and end stops, to help you achieve a perfect finish.

End matching is a feature that we can include with this natural timber cladding system. This tongue and groove profile that improves waterproofing and eliminates the need to measure and trim the ends of the boards. This enables installers and contractors to save time and minimise their waste during installation.

We offer our Trendplank timber cladding in a wide range of thermally-modified and hardwood timber species which have been specifically selected for their natural beauty and suitability to wall and ceiling applications.

Whether you require the timber to be supplied uncoated or fully pre-coated, we can accommodate. We offer a wide range of high quality finishes including Cutek Extreme CD50 oil as our standard finish, WOCA Exterior oil as a water-based oil and SiOO:X, a transformative timber treatment that speeds up the weathering process while still protecting the timber.

Timber battens - Proplank

Direct fixed or click-in, our natural timber battens come in a wide variety of sizes, spacing configurations and shapes!

Proplank is a system that utilises steel clips, nylon spacer brackets and acoustic backing (if required). We have designed the system to minimise installation time and remove the need for specialist labour. All while not compromising on aesthetics, the durability and strength of the system.

The Proplank profile can be used with a wide range of hardwood timber species including blackbutt, jarrah, ironbark, spotted gum and more.

Charred timber - Shou Sugi Ban

Also known as Yakisugi, Shou Sugi ban is a finish applied to timber by virtue of charring it with fire. Applying this burnt timber finish yields a carbon coating that not only enhances the timber’s aesthetics but also provides exceptional protection.

Surprisingly to many, charring strengthens and fortifies the timber, making it more durable in the long run. The carbon layer, complemented by an oil coating, forms a robust barrier against moisture, rendering it an excellent choice for outdoor applications. As well as a bold storytelling option for interior spaces.

At Mortlock Timber we char our timber products in our WA facilities. We pride ourselves on the dedicated time and effort we have put into perfecting the Shou Sugi Ban process to ensure we provide the highest standard finish every time.

At Mortlock Timber we offer dynamic charring solutions for two key systems: cladding and our timber screening.

Specifically tailored for our Trendplank timber cladding, Shou Sugi Ban charred timber is ideal for both walls and ceilings. We do not recommend using charred timber for decking or flooring. Charred Trendplank cladding can be provided in timber pieces ranging from 40×19 to 40×40 across all profiles excluding a centre groove profile.

Products we do not offer at Mortlock Timber

Flooring

While we still offer timber decking options at Mortlock Timber, our focus has shifted to delivering high-quality architectural timber. We do not offer timber flooring.

Accoya

While we offer thermally-modified timber at Mortlock Timber, we do not offer Accoya. Accoya is Pinus radiata that has been put through a modification process using acetic acid.

Western red cedar

We do not supply Western red cedar. Don’t get us wrong, Western red cedar is an amazing timber. However, as we frequently hear concerns around the costs and availability with Western Red Cedar, we have invested in developing an option that does not compromise on aesthetics or durability of the timber specified for a project.

At Mortlock Timber, we currently offer Malvec  as a compelling alternative to Western red cedar for several reasons that you can read about here.
